I've been reading a lot and posting on forums. Thought I'd add this one to the blog and the link to where I posted it. Just sick of people blaming torre for everything and the stupid reasons they give:
Maybe it wasn't Torre, but the players?
The decision to leave wasn't about the money, it was about having a little self-pride. I totally agree with Torre in that he didn't need any "motivation" in regards to the incentive clauses. Of course he wanted to win, and after 12 years of loyal service, I would think that would be obvious. People who think it was about the money have no idea about what motivates people like Joe Torre. Typical Steinbrenner thing, make it about the money. Anyone remember at all the overpriced, underachieving people the Yankees had to endure before the beginning of the Torre era? I could rattle off an ad nauseum list of people who stunk it up that George wanted here, and overspent for. I wonder why we never see any of those people at Old-Timers Day? Maybe rthey aren't invited for the obvious embarassment and reminder it would be of how crappy the Yanks were under the "pay people tons of money plan to get nothing." Sound familiar? Half of the people on the Yankee teams in the last 5 years.
Late 80's- early 90's's regrettable contracts: Steve Balboni, Ken Phelps, Jack Clark, Steve Trout, Dave La Pointe, Rick Rhoden, Tim Leary, Pete Incaviglia, Andy Hawkins, Melido Perez, Kenny Rogers
late 90's: maybe Chuck Knoblach, was there even any other really bad contracts? There were a ton of bad relievers, but they weren't paid that much
2001-2007: Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Raul Mondesi, Roger Clemens (this year), Tony Womack, Javier Vasquez, Jose Contreras, That freaking guy from atlanta they signed for 4 years, 32 mill and pitched for squat, Carl Pavano. Ditto again for the relievers.
I'm tempted to put Mussina and Gaimbi there too, but at least they performed well for a while. And I'm sure I forget a bunch of others too, but you get the idea.
Since 2001, the spendthrift fantasy league way the Yanks have been put together is what has messed up the team, not Torre. You can pin it some on Cashman, some on the fools in Tampa, and some on George. He had a great group of TEAM players to work with in the 90's, and a bunch of overpaid egos this decade.
Maybe it was time for Joe to go, since they might have just kept spending even more on garbage for him to manage. But I find it extremely unfair to pin everything on him, when there are so many hands in the pot to blame.
